Crystal Yu is a recent graduate in the Global Resource Systems program with a focus on global health and nutrition. As someone born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, she is interested in learning and sharing the different food and cultural experiences of Chinese Canadians, as well as bridging the intergenerational gap across Chinese communities and families. In her free time, you will find Crystal baking cookies, eating cookies, sharing her cookies, or playing volleyball.
Nathan is a fourth-year student studying Applied Biology at UBC. A third-generation Chinese-Canadian, he is interested in the history of Chinese farming and migration in the Lower Mainland. In his spare time, he enjoys watching nature documentaries and being outdoors with his dog.
Wei Yan is Chinese-Malaysian who studies plant and soil sciences at UBC. When she was looking for a deeper connection between her cultural roots and the intersection with our land and food systems, she also found her passion in storytelling through food and community engagement by working with different project teams at SJC. She also loves growing food!
Tiffany Mak is a 4th year Global Resource Systems student with a focus on environmental sciences and Asian studies. She is a 2nd generation Canadian with parents from Hong Kong. In her spare time, Tiffany enjoys walking in nature while capturing photos and sharing with others photos and facts about marine life.
Stanley is a MA student and Teaching Assistant (TA) in the UBC Department of History. His research interests include public and oral history, Southeast Asian history, and Asian Canadian history. As an ethnic Chinese who grew up in Kuala Lumpur, he is interested in the community engaged work INSTRCC is doing because he hopes to learn more about the local Chinese-Canadian community in Vancouver and apply his training as a historian for a good cause. Stanley has worked as a coordinator and Research Assistant (RA) on numerous projects for St. John’s College, the Institute of Asian Research, and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He enjoys playing badminton, watching movies in theatres, and eating Malaysian food, especially Char Kuay Teow.
Rose is a master’s student in the School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia, interested in the connections between food systems and urban design. A native to Vancouver, she is continually exploring different ways to understand her home city and the unique stories it holds. When she’s not doing yoga or slaving away under a never-ending pile of research papers, you can find her baking 红豆酥饼 for her family and friends.
Debbie is a creative person and likes to express her creativity by drawing, writing, singing, and dancing. She’s fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. Debbie just graduated University, double majoring in Economics and English Literature.
Daniel Chen is a 4th-year Asian Studies major and Asian Canadian and Asian Migration minor at UBC. He has moved between Los Angeles and Beijing and currently calls Richmond home. Inspired by his multicultural upbringing, he found a passion for documentary storytelling to shine light on less-heard narratives around immigrant culture and ultimately bring humans together.
As a non-Chinese international student at UBC, Andrew’s path to working in the field of local Chinese Canadian heritage has been long and winding. He does, however, greatly value the chance to be a part of a team that is truly at the cutting edge when it comes to community-oriented history and intergenerational connections.
